Hoverboards 101

The popular 1989 film Back to the Future Part II featured character Mary McFly with the futuristic levitating board. Today, over 30 years after the movies release, our modern versions of Hoverboards are enjoyed by kids, teens, and adults alike. Also called a Self-Balancing scooter the modern Hoverboard does not actually hover off the ground but rather uses two wheels and a motor powered by a lithium-ion battery. Movement is achieved when the rider uses their body weight and balance.

Let’s go a bit deeper into the technology:
Hoverboards have a platform between the two wheels where the rider will stand. The direction and speed of the board is controlled based on how far forward or back the individual leans. An internal mechanism called a gyroscope will assist in maintaining balance by adjusting the tilt of the board. Also inside the unit are microprocessors that regulate the power output going into the wheels determining the speed. Average hoverboard speeds are around ten to twelve kilometers per hour, but can go up to 15km/h.

Safety
One concern with hoverboards is safety, especially among younger riders but hoverboards can be safely operated with ease. There is a bit of a learning curve at the beginning to understand how to shift your body weight to successfully move your hoverboard, but usually you get the hang of it within 5 to 10 minutes. It is a good idea to do this with the help of a parent or friend in a controlled environment to help prevent injury. There is a video linked below with the basics of how to safely operate a hoverboard. We always recommend helmets and protective gear like elbow pads and knee pads when operating a hoverboard.
